Tips for Choosing a Moving Company

By Brentz Walker

Moving to a new place is a challenge, whether you just sold your house or are just renting a new apartment. Finding a great moving company is essential, how should you go about it? Everything you own, all of your important things are being left in the care with this company. When you hire good movers, you can have less of a headache that inevitably seems to come with moving. There are movers who are not very competent at some companies, because there are no proper regulations for the moving industry here in North America. It is your responsibility to find movers who will do the job safely and correctly. Researching the available companies in your area is a good idea, to find a reputable company.

Some of the ideas to keep in mind are:

Learn from the experiences of others, get advice on the companies that family or friends have used in the past. Look at a few companies and get a reliable estimate, talk to 3 or more. Once you've narrowed down three or four companies you want to check out, make appointments to have a rep from each one come out and give you a written estimate. The company must send a rep to your house and look at your possessions to give you a correct estimation; rule out a company that tries to give you a quote over the phone, or tells you that seeing your possessions in advance isn't necessary. If they won't inspect in person, or the price they give you is strangely low cost, be wary.

If you are thinking about using a company, it can't hurt to give a quick phone call to the Better Business Bureau just to double check that they are not listed as unscrupulous. When companies are in a bad standing, you should move along and consider other options.

If the movers want a big lump payment before they do any work, look elsewhere. The industry standard practice is to make full payment upon completion of the move.

Ask the company about their damage policies, look into other options and add-ons, and get this all in writing. They should provide you with a booklet outlining your rights, as well as the mover's rights and responsibilities.

When there are difficult areas to navigate, including stairs, let the company know ahead of time so they can be prepared. If there are complications, this could increase prices, and it makes sense to have a good idea of the cost before the move.

Write down the name of the company representative, and get a document stating date of delivery, and estimated cost. Check that the agreements you made have a clause that is called "not to exceed" and insist that it is a "binding" agreement. When the move is completed, you will not have unexpected costs or other issues.

Look into what is covered when it comes to packing your things, or if the company does it. This could make a difference in the price, as well as in who's liable in the event of any damage.

Check with your home insurer to see if your home policy will cover your possessions during the move. When the moving company is providing insurance for your items, ensure that your coverage is comprehensive and that your items have a replacement value for their full amount.

If you know what you are doing, and get the best moving company to help, moving can be quick and easy. Research about the company you go with will pay off by having safer and more reputable service. Your home insurance company should be informed of your move as soon as you are aware of it. Discuss your insurance needs for your new home, your goods in transit, and any goods you may have to put in storage.
