An office job may be necessary for economic survival, but sitting and staring at a computer only decreases fitness and encourages stress. The passage of time has given impetus to this movement. Baby-boomers born during the years following World War II are now undeniably old, and many even fit the textbook definition of elderly. Voltage-driven machines are somewhat bulkier, have slightly fatter and wider tires, and are often more expensive than other pedal-powered vehicles.

Most local and city governments apply the same regulations to these voltage-powered machines as they do to pedal-only models. Even though they are capable of achieving speeds as high as twenty or thirty miles per hour, unit capability must not exceed those limits, or risk re-classification as a scooter or motorcycle. There is usually no license requirement, and riders must follow the same rules as other bikers.

One of the main questions posed by many potential buyers concerns battery-power, and whether it will be sufficient to realistically conquer a steep hill. To combat that worry, manufacturers now offer vehicles with varying power packs that conform to local limits. In some cities, for example, battery-powered vehicles are banned from paths and off-road trails, but are welcomed anywhere else standard models can go.

Like any rechargeable device, battery power must be renewed regularly. Depending on usage, these modules provide a range of 20-30 miles, and the type of terrain and common weather conditions can cause those figures to vary. Compared to auto mileage the numbers seem uncomfortably low, but in reality most people who ride that distance on a daily basis are able to recharge overnight.

Relying solely on the optional power advantage may be tempting, but for most middle-aged individuals the fitness factor means using the pedals whenever possible. Most enthusiasts will ignore dry environmental statistics and simply enjoy the exhilaration of coasting silently through the countryside. A gasoline motorcycle or scooter goes faster, but is noisier and dirtier when compared to a reliably strong, silent battery-powered system.

Quantifying the long-term effects of fossil fuel emissions is a long-term project, but the positive physical benefits of riding are of immediate value. These vehicles are not inexpensive, and can still be stolen with relative ease, but the fact remains that for people who wish to improve their overall health while making the daily commute simpler, choosing electricity is a good option.
