Scale Aviation Is Steadily Rising In Popularity

By Sherry Gross

Boys' toys never change, they just get more expensive, so many would say. Whether you are a young boy or a man, flying scale aviation is great fun. It gets one out into the open air where you can enjoy the thrill of watching models flying in the sky.

For those enthusiasms that love anything to do with war, the T-6 is a must. It is a single engine aircraft that was used for training purposes in the United States Army Air Forces as well as the United States Navy. It is also known as the AT-6 or SNJ. It is still one of the most popular war planes and is often used for air demonstrations and static displays.

A new one that is now out is the Bush Plane. This plane is known for its ability to go deep into territory where no car or inexperienced pilot would dare to venture. These real planes are still in use today, taking goods in and out of locations that many would not dare to venture.

The model scale has an impressive 110 inch wingspan and has a gas engine of 30 cc. It is made up of balsa and plywood and all parts are made to specific measurements to ensure an accurate and balanced flight. In its final form it is very similar to the original in looks and in flight performance.

The finish is of a realistic sheen and is very easy to maintain. The control surfaces are replicas of the original as well as the landing gear, radial cowling and multi-cylinder engine. The front doors can be opened and are located on either side of the fuselage. The radio equipment is hidden by the pilot seats but is still secure with a few simple magnets and easily located. The wing panels are secured to the fuselage with aluminum wing joiners. The horizontal stabilizers can be easily removed for loading and transport.

The handling of this plane is very responsive whether you are keeping the speed down or at it's fastest. An optional set of scale floats are sold separately. The engine is in the front of the model which enables it to take off on fields that are shorter than normal. This can be flown every day for more enjoyment.

The length is 1.70 meters and weights about 8.80 kg and the EP motor size is 160 outrunner. The size of the battery is 2150 - 2700mAh and it comes in white, red and black. It takes about 15 to 20 hours to assemble it from start to finish. It has a preassembled fuel tank and all high quality hardware is included.

Its capabilities in the air included the split S, this is when the pilot half rolls and does a descending half-loop. This was taught to be used in dogfighting and gave the pilot the opportunity to withdraw from combat. The machines are also able to do a few simple maneuvers depending on the experience of the controller.
