An Auto Upholstery Cleaning Primer

By Cornelius Nunev

Your vehicle's upholstery will become soiled by everyday dirt, food, smoke, sweat and other fluids, sprays, powders and salves. Regular exposure to the blazing sun only makes things worse. Here's how to clean your car's upholstery so that you will not be embarrassed for your date to see just how revolting you are when you are cruising by yourself.

Stage a preemptive juggling strike

When you are trying to keep your automobile clean, you should avoid doing anything other than driving in the automobile. The automobile needs your full attention, or you can take a break to get something such as food if you need to. This will keep your vehicle much cleaner.

Fire up the vacuum

General day-to-day maintenance of your car's upholstery begins (and sometimes ends) with the vacuum. Do this regularly, just as you would as part of your home, as it lifts the upholstery fibers upright. This makes it more difficult for future dirt to set in. Use a specialized vehicle vacuum with interchangeable parts that are intended to reach into the contours of vehicle upholstery. When you do this, remove all floor mats so that you can vacuum underneath, and then vacuum the mats separately before returning them to the floor.

You can shield your car with stain repellents such as Scotchguard. Even if you think it is a little bit expensive, it is worth it in the end.

Get leather solution

If you think it's a good idea to purchase Armor All or some other leather-cleaning product for your vehicle's upholstery, then additionally you probably think that the only water secure to drink is Fiji. For washing leather, a damp towel is usually all that's necessary. Fully finished leather is already water resistant, so if you catch a spill quickly, it may not seep through. If the spot is a bit more serious - such as ink or nail polish - you'll need leather cleaner and a soft sponge. Do not use goods that aren't designed for leather only.

Get everything else cleaned

When taking care of rubber and vinyl upholstery surfaces, you may want to invest in interior protectant since both get damaged in the sun very easily. You might want specialty cleaners also. If you have some baking soda around, you can put it on a damp rag to clean vinyl. Do not forget to rinse with dishwashing detergent and water after that though. It is a homemade remedy to help.

Think about the extras

Dilute coffee spills with cool water and blot. If the stain stays, soak with glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes

Let greasy stains sit in paint thinner and salt or cornmeal overnight and then vacuum the area. Make sure you test it in a different area first

Use hairspray or salt on pen ink stains in carpeting

Getting rid of vomit does not have to be difficult. Just put club soda or baking soda on it to dilute the acids in it

Getting rid of blood is easy with dry laundry starch and cold water mixtures. Just put it over the blood and let dry. Vacuum in the morning

Dilute alcohol spills with cold water

When brightening fading carpet, all you need is a mixture of half-cup of ammonia and one pint of water. This only works if you do not have wool carpet. Just sponge the carpet with the mixture after vacuuming

If you have smelly carpet, you can use Borax. Let it sit for an hour and vacuum it up. Do this over again if you want to get rid of flea eggs and fleas

Hate carpet static? Mix five parts water and one part liquid fabric softener and spray on carpet upholstery

Use iron on low heat over a damp towel to get rid of carpet imprints. The iron can melt things if it sits for very long, so stay away from that

Want your vehicle mats to look good? Just use liquid shoe wax polish
