Study Shows More Texting One The Road

By Cornelius Nunev

A recent study by the NHTSA demonstrated that two out of 10 drivers is text messaging behind the wheel. Fifty percent all those who responded between the ages of 21 and 24 admitted to the act. This is in spite of the growing state-wide restrictions. However, other figures indicate that the problem is even more prevalent than individuals will confess.

Decisions from drivers

Between November and Dec. 2010, about 6,000 drivers were polled in the survey released on Dec. 8. Officials said the study was commissioned to better understand why "some individuals continue to make bad decisions" while driving.

David Strickland works as the head of the NHTSA. He said:

"What's clear from all of the information we have is that driver distraction continues to be a major problem."

Text messaging statistics

If somebody received a phone call while driving, the majority of the individuals surveyed said they would answer it and continue the drive. A mobile machine is being used in some way by about 1 in every 100 drivers at all times on the road, as reported by the NHTSA. The incidents are up 50 percent over last year, in spite of increasing state bans. PA was the 35th state to start the text messaging ban in November.

State-wide bans are supported by much of the responders. Still, half of the individuals said that their ability to drive was not affected by a cellular phone if they were just talking on it. About a quarter said they could text or email with no impact to driving ability. Of those surveyed, 90 percent said that they get nervous when a driver in the vehicle is text messaging or emailing while they're a passenger.

Traffic deaths lowest in decades

On the upside, the NHTSA figures also reported a decrease in traffic fatalities for 2010. This is regardless of the truth that traffic nationwide increased by 1.6 percent from 2009. And 32,855 individuals passed away on United States highways in 2010, compared to 33,808 fatalities in 2009. It has been over half a century since those amounts were that low. The last time they were that low, it was 1949.
