Basics Of Custom Mud Flaps

By Roger Hall

Mud flaps also go by the name mud guards. Like it is suggested in the name, they refer to flaps attached onto vehicles to offer protection to passengers, the vehicle, passengers and other users of the road against flying debris. The rotation of the tires causes them to throw debris into the atmosphere. The debris thrown can range from sizeable rocks to tiny pebbled. Vehicle fenders work together with custom mud flaps to provide the necessary protection that would otherwise result into damage or injury if not provided.

Making of mudflaps is done using various materials. Superiority of the qualities of rubber make it very common. However, there are other materials too including various plastics, polyurethane, and metals. The material used has high level of flexibility and resistance to damage by debris, tires, and road surfaces. Impregnation of debris into the product is possible if soft materials are used.

It is not only vehicles that these products are installed on. Motor cycles and bicycles also commonly have them installed. Due to lack of great speed and big debris in bicycles, plastic is often the material of choice. Motor cycles use stronger and larger products because they move faster and can throw bigger debris. This is the reason why stronger material like rubber is used on motor cycles.

Various methods can be used to install these products onto vehicles. Aluminum brackets are used commonly to hold the device in place in vehicles. Rivets and bolts are also used besides brackets. Rivets are not in wide usage. In bicycles, mudflaps are maintained in place by bolts and other parts. The device gets attached onto an inflexible metal strip which connects to the vehicle.

Mudflaps are usually installed behind the tire in the direction where debris moves when it is thrown. Each tire is usually fixed with a single independent flap. However, it is becoming increasingly common to see a single flap running across the two rear tires. This is more common in large trucks. Such large mudflaps are usually used to convey some information to the public.

Sizes and shapes of mudflaps vary widely and one should choose what pleases them. There are people who prefer huge mudflaps that swipe the ground when the vehicle moves. Those kinds are usually meant to be more cosmetic than functional. Similarly, there are individuals who like small but effective mudflaps. Rectangle is the default shape of these commodities, but other customized shapes like square can also be achieved.

Mudflaps are usually sold without decorations. However, the buyer has the option of adding decorations such as artwork and texts. If the vehicle is owned by a company, the company logo may appear on the mudflap. Some have and continue to use them to advertise products, services, or businesses. Toyota and other car manufacturers also sell mudflaps printed with their logos.

Some people incorporate LEDs as part of the customization. The LEDs mat stay on at all times or they may be switched on and off by the driver. Mudflaps are regulated differently in different states. The may cause for regulation is to retain the primary purpose rather than clouding it with secondary functions like advertising.
