What You Should Know About Vintage VW Kubelwagen Parts

By Edward Howard

No matter that parts for them are no longer manufactured and that they belonged to and older and simpler tech era, but many old VWs are still running. Volkswagen aficionados have made their passion for the brand work for them. Tech for cars of that era was all about German knowhow for creating the most efficient and advanced machines that lead most everyone else in the world.

The retro fever has caught up with people who like driving vintage war machines on the streets. VW Kubelwagen parts addresses this need for collectors who want their units to look good as new in their original design. Some good research online can get you the best kinds of modern components for these excellent and versatile cars.

Type 82, in the year 1943 is the classic collectible Kubelwagen, a Wehrmacht workhorse whose basic design is still excellent. The engineers during this time at Volkswagen studied the specs well, designing a multipurpose car that would be used for many driving conditions. By simply looking at one unit, you can immediately tell that this was the HUMVEE of its day.

You could say that the Germans perfected things like fuel economy, ergonomics and accessorizing in this particular model. There are many German car enthusiasts all over the world, and the idea is all about the engineering and efficiency of these machines. There are many vintage units for sale, but rare is the one that comes with complete parts and accessories.

Remodeled units are those that came from storage, with perhaps only some parts remaining from the original complement. These parts will include things like gearboxes, the 24.5 Hp engine, axles and the chassis. Most are rusted out, missing all its wires, its accessories, doors, tires, windows, glass and lights.

But then, Volkswagen is nothing if not efficient in curating its own old models and storing its pieces, perhaps moulds and even the manufacturers manuals. Many of the better restorers and makers of replacement parts probably have an agreement with Volkswagen. Access to all original pieces and accessories can make them precisely remake the vehicle you own.

It will be great for Kubelwagen enthusiasts who are contracting for a remodel. The original dashboard can be replicated as if it were the 40s, from odometers to pod switches for the split dash. The restorers can lathe, machine and mould all the necessary parts so there is no difference between the restored and original.

These are early days for the collector binge for this particular model. The HUMVEE was never made into a civilian vehicle, only similar looking types were. What enthusiasts want are the real thing, the ones that were driven on roads during the 40s, and the Kubelwagen is a new entry that joins models like the American made Willys MB jeep type, which is the oldest known SUV.

The model being discussed can be something that joins a grand collection but not many can have it from the original. This ups the value on existing units that have been collected. But some restorers can certainly build a complete replica.
