Getting Acquainted With The Common Types Of Construction Equipment

By Halisse Enmma

Excavators, skid steer, loader and crane are just some of the common names of heavy equipment you might have heard of. In reality, there is a plethora of construction equipment types that enumerating them all would be difficult, if not impossible. But while there is truth to this, you should be aware that all these machines can fall under one of the equipment categories.

And just in case, you'd like to find out about the classification of heavy equipment, then continue reading. Typically, equipment for construction work can be divided into: earthmoving, material handling equipment, compaction and paving equipment, hauling equipment, aggregate production, and pumping equipment. Under the earthmoving equipment category, you would find machines designed for digging and pushing the earth. Excavator, backhoe, drag line, bull dozer, power shovel and scrapers belong to this category.

Following earthmoving is the material handling equipment. These are machines generally applied for movement, storage, control and protection of materials. Examples of this are construction and industrial forklifts, cranes, dolly, hoists and pallet lift. Compacting and paving equipment is another group of heavy equipment common to construction sites. Compaction is a term used to define the method of decreasing the air volume in hot mix asphalt pavement construction.

Plates and rollers are examples of equipment under this classification. Apart from these groups, there are the haulers. Hauling equipment is used to perform the following: carry building materials; dispose excavated materials to clear the site; and transport heavy equipment and tools. Grouped under this are dump truck and dumper. The dump truck comes as side or rear and bottom dump trucks, which in general, have earth moving function. The dumper is being applied to projects involving short hauls on rough roads.

Aside from these categories, there is the aggregate and concrete production equipment, which as it name suggests, is used for producing aggregate and concrete. Examples of this are: jaw crusher, gyratory crusher, cone crusher, roll crusher, hammer mill and rod and ball mills. In addition, there is the pumping equipment, which is used to raise, compress or transfer fluids.

When you browse online to search, you would come across a selection of pumps, including centrifugal pump, diaphragm pump, submersible pump, test pump and well point dewatering. This category could also include discharge and suction hoses. There are other categories of equipment that are employed in construction projects. But while you continue to check them out, it would help if you can also learn about safety equipment like fall protection lines and fire extinguishers. Whatever you invest in doing so will pay off in the coming days.
