Everything There Is To Know About Junkyard

By Rosella Campbell

There are several names which are usually used in referring to these types of yards. The more commonly alternate names used are; breakers, salvage yards as well as automobile wrecking yards. A junkyard can simply be described as a place where vehicles which have been damaged in one way or the other are taken. The ownership of a place like this can vary according to the use of the premise. There are those which are normally used in keeping government vehicles. Others are used in keeping vehicles from the general public. The ones which accept vehicles from the general public can be owned by anyone who wishes to open such a business. Licensing is a must for one to start operating a business of this kind.

Yards are used in accommodation of damaged machines. For instance there are yards for small planes, motorcycles and also boats. These kinds of yards are used in keeping the damaged trucks and other vehicles. Yards can also be found in places with such similar machines.

It can generally be said that the yards usually operate within a certain geographical area. This is because of the transportation costs which can be incurred when doing this over a large geographical are. Towing the vehicles over long distances can be time consuming as well very costly. The vehicles which are transported to places like this are usually damaged in a way that they cannot propel themselves. Apart from damage, the vehicle may also be abandoned for a long period after it started developing some problems. These vehicles become immobile and can only be towed to a certain place.

The operators of these yards acquire the damaged vehicles from different sources. Most of the wreckage are bought from individual owners. Insurance companies forms part of the sellers. The central government or the local authority may also dispose their damaged vehicles and they sell them to these yard operators. Agreement on the price to buy each vehicle is arrived at after assessing the extent of damages.

Each company dealing with buying of these vehicles has a way in which they get the vehicles to their location. Towing is always the way in which they transport most of the vehicles. A company may have its own towing vehicle or may contract another firm which specializes in towing service provision.

As damaged vehicles enter the salvage yard, an inventory is made. The details to be noted down vary widely depending on the condition of the vehicle. Mostly, an inventory is made about the year, the make as well as the model. Also, the overall condition of the vehicle is noted down as well as the mechanical parts available.

After information is taken, the operators work on the wreckage. The important parts or the wreckage are taken and used in the repair of various vehicles in good condition. Also, they can be sold as spare parts.

Easier things to separate such as doors, windshields and light housing are kept aside. The side view mirrors, alternators and mufflers are among the parts dismantled. Operators may opt to remove the whole transmission system or engine.
