Firewood is any material made of wood that is used as a fuel for various reasons. It does not require one to process the firewood so that it can be usable or useful to man. The domestic setting has the longest history of utilizing wood fuel. In ancient times people depended on wood fuel to make fires which kept them warm. They also used it to cook food. After preparation and all necessary preparation processes have been completed, the wood is taken to storage. Storage is done in several different ways depending on the place. Some people prefer making simple piles for the wood, while others prefer placing the wood into free-standing stacks. Some may prefer to use specialized structures for storage. Storage is done so as to prevent water from getting into the wood and to allow it time to dry further.

Placing the wood on stacks involves the placing of wood on top of another to a given preference of the person. How high the stack will reach solemnly depends on the person and how the ends have been constructed. Since the woods are just stacked there might be risk of contact with water therefore covering of the wood is advisable.

While storing, wind and sunshine should be able to reach the stack because they help to expedite the drying process. How much time is needed for the firewood to dry completely may depend on a few factors such as weather, type of wood, and how much it is covered. Wood on the outer surfaces is likely to dry faster than one buried deep into the stack.
