EPA Downgrades BMW 328I Mph

By Ingrid Johnson

German automaker BMW is probably not the happiest camper at this time. The mpg fuel-economy rating for its 328i automatic design has been reduced by the EPA.

Drop not large

Last week, the 2012 BMW 328i automatic was reaching 24 mpg city and 36 mpg on the highway. Not, it only gets 23 and 33 after the EPA ordered BMW to change the miles per gallon.

Tests done by EPA

Every automaker does a variety of tests that the EPA requires to figure out what the gas mileage rating is for the vehicle. Sometimes the EPA does a second test just to make sure while other times it will just accept the automakers' numbers. After doing its own test, the EPA decided that the BMW car needed a decrease.

Only a few get analyzed

According to Car and Driver magazine, only about 15 percent of all automobile models sold in the U.S. get the personal treatment from the EPA testers.

Enormous drop

Typically, when the EPA makes a change to a fuel economy rating, it is not that low. This is something that BMW said surprised it. It is an enormous drop when the rating drops by three mpg. Minor changes were anticipated, as the fine print disclaimer states it will do.

Learn about BMW 328i

An eight-speed transmission - operated by paddle shifters in the steering wheel - can be found in the 2012 BMW 328i. It also gets 260 lb-ft of torque with its 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower engine.

What are the EPA standards?

The car was at first tested by BMW in Munich. An EPA fuel-economy test has to be done on an indoor track, under controlled conditions. The type of fuel is even specified, so that all variables remain constant. The vehicle is attached to a dynamometer and is put through five different test cycles: city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway.

Keeping the lower rating

The reduced rating should be anticipated to stay for the 328i automatic, as BMW cannot retest the car until its 2013 model comes out. The six-speed manual shift version still has a great 23/24 rating.
