Purchasing A Used Auto From Its Present Owner

By Cindy Quera

When you are going to buy something that will cost you several thousand dollars, it is always a good idea to take into consideration all angles of the sale before you spend your money. This cannot be more true than when you are in the market for a used car.

Used cars sold by private sellers are subject to more inquiry than used cars that are sold in a dealership because although used cars from private sellers are no doubt cheaper, they just do not offer the same amount of guarantee in terms of reliability and safety than the cars you can buy from dealers. You can try searching here to find used cars sold by dealers and owners and make a comparison of prices. But if you really want to go for a used car being offered by its current owner, better check out a few helpful tips to save you some money.

One of the most important things that you need to remember when you are planning on getting a used car sold by a private seller, is that you will be buying the car on an "as is" basis. Unlike the cars that you can obtain from reputable establishments, such as Hertz Car Sales, you cannot have the assurance that the car is maintained on a regular basis or it was reconditioned properly; there is no certification (most of the time) or even maintenance records and you have no idea how well the previous owner drove it.

In order for you to be sure that you are going to spend your money on a car that will not cause you a lot of headaches later on, be sure that you will have your own mechanic check the car and take it out for a test drive before you decide to negotiate price with the seller.

You also have to perform some research on used car values and prices before you check out the car that you are interested in. When you investigate on the prevailing price of the car before meeting the sellers, you can set a reasonable price that you would negotiate with.

Doing so will also help you determine if the sellers are asking you for too much for the said car. You also need to stay away from a car that has a lot of 'improvements' on it since owners have a tendency of adding a lot of features to the vehicle, thinking that it would help them sell it for more money; why should you pay for their unnecessary add-ons? And to help you find the best deals, make it a point to compare at least two cars and sellers with each other before you decide on buying.
