Information About Japanese Kei Trucks

By Grace Daniels

If you have been thinking about purchasing one of the Japanese miniature kei trucks there are different places where they are available for sale. In areas like Japan kei class vehicles are very small miniature automobiles. The vehicles can be used to haul and transport items. Some of the vehicles offer the ability to have four wheel drive. Most come standard with rear wheel drive.

The name of the vehicle derives from the Japanese word keijidosha that means an extremely small vehicle for commercial use. There are both van and truck versions. The vans are called microvans and they are able to transport a small amount of people for a short distance. Inside Japan they also are described as Keitora that may include the truck, van, or a very small car version. Trucks are often legal to operate inside Japan and almost all of Asia. Some places even in the United States have allowed them for agricultural and city use.

By Japanese law there are specifications that must be met to be classified as a keitora vehicle. The automobile must not be more than three point four meters long and have a width less than one point forty eight meters. The height cannot exceed two meters and largest displacement is six hundred and sixty cc. The vehicles on average weigh about fifteen hundred pounds.

The lightest weight varieties have even been known to get up to speeds of seventy five miles per hour. In kilometers it is around one hundred and twenty per hour. Every model features a cab over design to take advantage of the maximum amount of space in the most efficient way. Payloads that can be pulled and carried will depend on the model and brand of the truck.

Some of the vehicles which are exported to other parts of the world may have larger engines so they can allow them to go faster speeds and to carry a large pay load. Some of the most common manufacturers of the kei design include Daihatsu, Honda, Subaru, Suzuki, Mazda, and Mitsubishi. Different brands and models vary slightly in design and price.

In Asian countries the automobiles are found everywhere and they are used for farming, construction, fishing, and even fire fighting in some rural areas. In the United States and other parts of North America customers can buy the used models for off road driving, farming, fishing and hunting. In the North American market the price can depend on several different things. Many kei vehicles get forty miles per gallon or even more so they are considered to be fuel efficient.

In North America all of the models have a cab over design, windshield wipers, seat belts, lights, heater, as well as AM radio. In many parts of the United States they do not meet the safety designs mandated by the government. Many places they are only allowed on local roads. The states of Louisiana and Oklahoma have the most open laws concerning the kei cars where they are allowed to be registered as a personal vehicle.
