JDM Engines For Sale: What You Should Know

By Grace Daniels

JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) is a term used to describe locally made automobiles and parts in Japan. Internationally, it is used by car enthusiasts to describe the sale of vehicles and accessories manufactured in Japan, designed to adhere to the strict standards of Japanese auto regulations. There are JDM engines for sale in the United States as well as other countries.

JDM engines can be found primarily online and in some specialty shops. Prices range from a few hundred to a few thousand U. S. Dollars. The cost in the U. S. Is typically less than that of a domestically manufactured engine. Foreign automakers such as Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Nissan and Mazda use JDM engines in their vehicles.

In Japan, vehicles are used for a much shorter time than in the U. S., with the typical vehicle being traded in for scrap at around 40K miles. Vehicles are also taxed at a greater percentage as they age, and held to high quality standards. These standards reportedly make for more reliable engines that need less repairs, and can be expected to run well into a couple hundred thousand miles. When these Japanese cars are recycled, the low-mileage engines are then exported to the U. S. And around the world.

Supporters of JDM motors believe that their main benefit lies in the rigorous quality standards implemented by the Japanese. Their vehicles are often recycled for scrap much sooner than in the U. S., leaving relatively low-mileage, quality engines available for exportation into the U. S. And other countries. This is one of the main benefits that intrigues buyers.

Since the USA and Japan have very different standards for vehicle emissions, a vehicle with a JDM engine may not pass EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards of acceptable emissions. These emission requirements vary from state to state, with California being the strictest. Although it is generally possible to tweak a JDM engine to meet state emission standards, it can be time consuming and costly. Another potential concern with imported JDM motors is the inability to verify the actual mileage on the engine.

As with any vehicle purchase, it's important for buyers to do proper research before purchasing a JDM engine. If possible, view the engine in person and ask to look it over. Checking things such as the spark plugs, timing belt, oil valve and oil pan can be useful in determining the condition of a JDM motor.

It is also very important for the sellers of JDM engines to do everything possible to assure their clients that they are reputable. Those who sell their motors out of shops, rather than just online, have an advantage in this area, as a custom viewing the engine in person allows for a more thorough inspection. If this is not possible, be honest, specific and detailed when selling online. Be ready to answer any questions the customer may have, and offer a return policy or warranty in case the customer is not satisfied with his or her purchase.

A genuine, JDM engine can be a great purchase, whether as an addition to "swap" into an already owned vehicle or even as a reason to purchase a foreign made vehicle. An internet search of JDM Engines for Sale is a good place to begin looking for information. Buyers and sellers should work together to make the transaction smooth and mutually beneficial.
