Motorcycle LED Lights Are Now Standard Options

By Michelle Howe

Of course headlights have been around as long as cars and bikes have been but there have been some recent advancements in the technology that are allowing for some changes. Motorcycle LED lights are much brighter, burn longer, use less electricity, and if needed they can come in various colors or changing colors as well.

It is already hard enough for most drivers to see a motorcycle on the road, especially at night. Add to this the fact that some of the drivers on these bikes do not obey the standard traffic laws and like to drive fast, and you have a recipe for disaster. There are however a majority of drivers who do obey the traffic laws and they are still getting into accidents because someone could not see them.

Of course they are not cheap and they involve some heavy customization, certain people just have to have them and will pay anything to have them installed. Aside from the show aspect of these lights there is a huge safety advantage to using LEDs instead of the old standard incandescent ones. With the incandescent lights bulbs they were a little bit cheaper but were not as bright. They were getting switched out as aftermarket upgrades before becoming a manufacturing option.

The accident rates of motorcycles crashing with other vehicles was on a steady rise over the years. It was always difficult for drivers of cars and trucks to see a motorcycle on the road, even during the daytime. Their smaller size and faster acceleration also made the driver of the bike a little more confident and that became a dangerous mix.

All of these things mean more drivers of bikes on the road and more chances for them to become involved in accidents. Sure, there are a fair number that take place that have nothing to do with other vehicles, but there are still more every year that involve multiple vehicle crashes. Motorcycles are hard to see, that is just a fact.

Bike safety is a big issue and one that also effects the insurance that is required for them. When getting insurance quotes it is a well known fact that the more safety features a vehicle has, the cheaper the insurance will be. Having LED lights has finally been recognized as one of those features for motorcycles simply because not all of them have them.

Once these become a standard in the manufacturing process the insurance rates will likely go back to a normal average but for right now it remains a benefit. Which is fine with most riders because they want the safety just as much as anybody else does. This also allows for more customization as mentioned earlier.

That being the case you end up with an accident because the driver of the car could not properly judge the distance. Had motorcycle LED lights been used they would have been bright enough for the car driver to realize that it was indeed a cycle and not another car. Proper lane judgement would have taken place and an accident could have been averted.
